Happy Birthday Alter Ego!
One year ago, I took the field with my girlfriend, a guy I hardly knew, and 2 guys I never met. We got some cheap ass Iron-On T-Shirts made that said “Alter Ego” across the front, they had our names on the back. They were cute.
I was commanding so I was off field 90% of the time and these guys had to go out on their own…I was scared as hell…it was 112 in the shade….blistering ass hot…and they had less scenario experience for all their lifetimes combined, than I had in the last 12 months. I had no choice but to rely on them to not only get work done on the field, but make us look good in the process…and there were a lot of eyes watching.
So here we are…12 months, 2 command wins, 6 events, and 7 awards later, and we’re still here. We’re bigger. We’re better. We’ve picked up some really talented players and met some really wonderful people along the way. As a captain, I’m forced to constantly evaluate our situation, take a look at where we are, and where I’d like us to be. And I gotta be honest. There was a time, I thought I might have made a mistake…that I should have left well enough alone. But I see now, more than ever, that these guys….this team….my family…have really made my dream a reality.
I don’t have the words to tell you how proud I am of these 6 players…every time I put that jersey on I tear up a little bit, because I’m just so damn proud. Proud to have you in my corner. Proud to have your backs. Proud to call you teamates, and proud to call you friends. This ride’s far from over. We’re only getting started.
Happy Birthday Alter Ego. I wish us many more….and all the best.
I love you guys! (and Gal) :p
